Artifical Intelligence (AI) and a new norm of lens calculation

Rodenstock defines a new norm in lens calculation

Today, most lenses are manufactured using a standard vision test with just four standard prescription values as input for the lens calculation process. With no further input available, standard eye values from the reduced eye model are used. However, these values suit just 2% of eyes and this affects how precisely the lens can be tailored to the individual’s eyes.

Using our immense biometric data set

To move away from this old lens calculation norm, we conducted an extensive analysis of our immense biometric data set.
Creating hundreds of thousands of individual biometric eye measurements with the DNEye® Scanner has allowed us to achieve one of the biggest biometric data sets in the industry. In combination with in-depth knowledge of the vision system, this data has enabled Rodenstock to learn more about the biometrics of the eye than ever before.

  • Step1

Unleashing the potential of a standard vision test

In analyzing our immense biometric data pool of over 500,000 individual biometric eye scans, we uncovered a correlation between eye length and sphere (SPH). This illustrated that the shorter the eye is, the higher the power of the eye. Using this correlation, we can determine eye length just from establishing the eye’s spherical power, which can be determined in a traditional vision test.

This means that we can define individual eye length more precisely using only standard prescription values as an input.

  • Step 2

Calculating key biometric parameters with higher precision

By uncovering correlations between the standard prescription values – the values determined during a traditional vision test – and the most important biometric eye parameters, Rodenstock is able to calculate the biometrics of the eye more precisely. These new, more precise lens calculation norms raise the bar for standard progressive lenses – progressive lenses that are produced using only the four standard prescription values as input for the lens manufacturing process.

  • Step 3

AI brings a new level of biometric precision into standard lens calculation

To unleash the potential of these more precise biometric calculations, we developed an advanced mathematical setup with immense calculation power. This enables us to implement a new level of biometric precision in lens calculation.

Extensive analysis and a collaboration with the University of Sussex led us to develop Rodenstock’s artificial intelligence technology. This enables us to combine our new lens calculation norms and form multi-dimensional correlations from which we can formulate an approximate biometric model of the individual eye.

The result: A new norm in progressive lens manufacturing

Rodenstock’s new AI technology makes it possible to include approximate biometric values when calculating lenses. This ensures a higher level of biometric precision when exact values from the DNEye® Scanner are not available. With this AI technology, we are creating a new norm within progressive lens manufacturing.
