The Rodenstock lens guarantee card – So you know what's going on!
A lens passport looks really complicated at first glance. But when you know what the many abbreviations and symbols mean it is really easy to read.
A lens guarantee card can look different, it is usually a document about the size of a business card. You generally receive it from your optician. The Rodenstock Guarantee & Service lens card contains all important information that is taken into account in the manufacture of your prescription lenses. It is primarily used to guarantee a quick replacement if you lose your spectacles or they get damaged.

What do the abbreviations and symbols stand for on the lens guarantee card? Find the answers here.

1. Sphere (Sph), shown here with a ball or sphere, indicates the spherical defective vision in dioptres. A positive value indicates long-sightedness (hyperopia), whereas a negative value indicates short-sightedness (myopia).
2. Then comes the cylinder (Cyl). This indicates a curvature of the cornea (astigmatism). In the case of a corneal curvature the eye has a different curve than normal, the curvature of the lens therefore has to be adapted to the cornea. The cylinder is also stated in dioptres.
3. If there is a corneal curvature, the direction or position of the curvature is described with the axis (A or Ach). The axis is always between 0° and 180° degrees.
4. If you need a different prescription for seeing in the near range and at a distance and therefore wear progressive lenses, then the addition value (Add) is relevant to you. It describes the near addition of a progressive lens and states the difference between distance and near vision value.

5. Another detail on the lens passport is the prism (P or Pr). This value is specified in the case of heterophoria (also called strabismus/squint/lazy eye) and relates to the deviation in centimetres per metre.
6. In the case of heterophoria, the base position (B) of the prism is also recorded as a degree. In contrast to the axis, this value can be between 0° and 360° degrees.
7. All information relating to the right eye is in this line. The line underneath contains the values for the left eye.
